The Big Chop

I made the decision to transition after my 23rd Birthday. I'd hit my goal of waist length a while before, and I wasn't satisfied with my ends. I kept my hair cut to midback length since I'm a fan of full, blunt cut ends.

I've been watching natural hair videos, reading blogs, and lurking in forums for years. Long Hair Care Forum helped me reach my relaxed hair goals. I was able to maintain thick, healthy hair using heat every two weeks. Sometimes once a week depending on what was going on. I went back and forth with the idea of transitioning for a while. I just knew I wasn't going to cut all my hair off!

Fast forward to May 11th, 7 months after my last tex-lax. I got out of the bed at around 3am, and parted my hair down the middle and began chopping my hair off!! I'd previously cut off 7 inches in October, and my hair had grown 4 inches since. My hair was getting tangled and matted, and was shedding like crazy! I just couldn't deal!! My roommate was in shock when she came in the living room and saw me sitting on the couch with a TWA. I was shocked too!!

I've spent the last couple of weeks battling dryness, and what may be heat damage in the front left section of my hair! My hair has literally been feeling like the Sahara desert, and its really frustrating. I've been researching and trying new products. My hair seems to HATE almost all of the products I was using while I was relaxed, so naturally my inner product junkie has been released.

I hope to have an established regimen soon, because I know that in order to retain length I have to have my moisture and protein balanced. Overall I am excited to embark on this journey, and learn to tame the hair that grows naturally from my scalp! Everywhere I go I see different textures of beautiful natural hair! It really is amazing!!

I also recorded my mini cut before and after, but I decided not to record my BC since it was a spur of the moment "I might regret this tomorrow" kind of thing.

I've only been natural for a little over 2 weeks, and I had my best hair day yesterday. I deep conditioned with Karen's Body Beautiful Luscious Locks Mask, with heat. I left it on overnight, and while I was in class since I had to wear a hat all day for our Raku firings. I don't think the overnight deep conditioning made the change since I'd done it before with frizzy results. I think using heat really helped the mask penetrate my hair.

Immediately after washing the conditioner out I applied coconut oil all over my wet hair, and then I applied Karen's Body Beautiful hair nectar. I oiled my scalp with Jamaican Black Castor Oil, and skipped out on styling aids. For the first time my hair was shiny and soft. Before my hair would be soft while it was drying, but after a few hours it would look dry, and feel dry. I'm glad I've found something that works good! I'm going to keep testing this method with different products to see how my hair responds!

I am glad you joined the natural side. I am sure your hair is easier to manage since your Big Chop. I have found that when I sit under the hair dryer when deep conditioning, it works better than when I keep it on over night. Anyway, I know you will love being natural!

Yeah, I haven't had the extreme dryness over the last week!! I've also been doing hot oil treatments with a steamer I found on Amazon!

Loreal has a new line of shampoos without sulfate. They are awesome! They also have deep conditioners as well. Since my scalp is oily, I do not put oils on my scalp. Therefore, I have to moisturize and condition my hair on the front end. Then I apply a light (liquid) oil on the hair only. I have been natural for 15 years. Another thing that I do sometimes is after washing my hair, I will put in the conditioner and leave in my hair all day. I think that you will love the natural hair. Explore, explore, explore!

Your hair is absolutely gorgeous LaShoine. I don't know if Jasmine knew your hair is completely natural. It is so silky and beautiful. When you get time, I would love for you to post some pics and your hair routine for all to see!

Thank you LaShoine! I'm late seeing this. I'll have to try Loreal's line. I've heard good things about it. I've had fun exploring the past 6 months. It is frustrating sometimes, but I love how soft it is, my pattern, and the volume. The frustration comes from the multiple textures! lol! I still can't believe its possible to have all of this going on on one head.

I was shocked when Jasmine cut her hair, but I am glad she did. I think natural is the best way to go.
