Featured Natural-LaShoine

Picture
I am soooooo happy that my friend Shoine sent me photos of her twists.  Just let me say, I am SUPER jealous of Shoine's hair.
She has beautiful hair.  It doesn't look real!

The pics you see are of twists with a coif on the side.  It is really nice.

Picture

Shoine has been natural for a very long time, so she has her hair care regimen mastered.  She wears her hair mostly straight, but during the summer months, she wears it curly.

No Meat Challenge

8/27/2013

Ok.  I will admit.  My eating has been out of control lately.  Summertime is hard for me because I am not in my regular routine.  I have eaten things this summer that I rarely eat. For instance, I ate about five cheeseburgers in one week.  I mean, things were getting out of control.  I was eating out just about everyday.  To make matters worse, I haven't been running or exercising!
SO. . .
I decided to give my system a rest by not eating meats for a while.  Now, don't get me wrong. I am not becoming a vegetarian.  I love seafood wayyyyyyyyy too much.  I can do without beef and pork, but I can not do without shrimp, crab legs, and scallops!  I just want to give my intestines a rest from all the overworking this summer.
Anyway, I am going to try to keep a journal of the foods that I eat.  I actually started yesterday, Monday, August 26.

Hair Style-High Side Pony-tail

7/28/2013

Picture
To accomplish this style, I used two of my old trustee hair clips and about 2 hair pins.  I made two sections with the twists in the back, then I twisted the left back section to the top of my head and secured it with one of the clips.  I left the ends of the twists hanging forward.  I also left the twists in the front hanging loosely.  I took the right back section of hair and twisted it to the top as well.  I secured it with the other clip.  Then, I pulled the twists in the front right over to join the twists on the front left side.  I secured them with hair pins so they would not hang in my face.

I Love Miami!

6/26/2013

Ok, I am always doing something crazy!  I decided at the last minute to go to Miami with my friend Boazmon!  Now, for those of you who do not know Boazmon, let me give you some background information.
Picture
Boazmon is obsessed with the Miami Heat basketball team.  She is even more obsessed with Dwyane Wade.  Anyway, Boazmon loves to support her team in any way she can.  She also makes sure people who are not that into basketball supports the Heat as well.  That is how I am involved.

Anyway, Shanquita talked me into going to Miami to go to the celebration parade for the Miami Heat.  We literally went down for one day!  I mean, who goes to Miami for one day????
Picture
Of course, I must admit, one of my main reasons for going to Miami was to eat some good food!  Actually, whenever I go out of town, I only have food on my mind!  Anyway, we ended up going to Flanigan's.  I had a hamburger that was so big, I couldn't even finish it.  I could barely bite it! Shanquita had all kinds of stuff.  It was really yummy!

5 Years Natural Length Check/Hair Cut

6/5/2013

I have officially been completely natural for 5 years as of June.  I have had many set backs and I am still learning how to take care of my hair.  Below is a length check at 5 years.  I don't know if I posted it or not, but I cut my hair in February (I think it was February) of this year.  I also just cut my hair in the back on Sunday, June 2.  Below are before and after pictures.
Picture
This picture shows my hair before I cut it.  My hair is below my waist.  My right hand is resting at my hip so that you can get a better idea of how long it was.
Picture
This picture shows my hair after the cut.  It is around waist length or a little above.  You can see where it is in comparison to my right hand on my hip.

Picture
This picture shows my twists before the cut.
Picture
This picture shows my twists after the cut.  Don't forget, my hair was flat ironed in both pics., so it is somewhat straight.  Once I wash it, the twists will be much shorter.

Hair Update!

6/5/2013

I decided to flat iron my hair for my cousin's wedding.  Instead of blow drying my hair, I decided to set my hair on rollers and sit under the hair dryer.  I was hoping it would make my hair more manageable without using the direct heat of a hand-held hair dryer.
Picture
The first thing I did was washed and deep conditioned my hair.  I used Creme of Nature leave in conditioner to set my hair on the rollers.

Picture

This is how my hair turned out after I took out the rollers.  It really did not turn out the way I was hoping, but it was decent.

Below is a pic of my hair after I flat ironed it.  Unfortunately, I did not take any pics right after I flat ironed it, so the pic below was taken a few hours afterwards.  This was taken right before the wedding.  I took it down right before I walked in.

This is how my hair was looking right after the wedding, a hot mess!

I really did not like my outfit, but oh well.  It was too late to change.  I ordered the dress  from Amazon.  The belt is "The Sash" from American Apparel.  The shoes are booties by B.C.B.G., the handbag is by Style & Co., and the earrings are by Unique Ears.

Biscoff Protein Shake Recipe

5/22/2013

Picture
Protein shakes are a great way to help you get your daily protein intake.  Sometimes, I use them as meal replacements.  I normally purchase the pre-mixed protein shakes from GNC, but I decided to try to save some money.  So, I have been mixing my own protein shakes.

Below is a quick and easy protein shake recipe.  I hope you enjoy : )

What You Will Need:
Picture
*8-10 ounces of unsweetened almond milk.
*1 scoop of protein powder
*1 Table Spoon of Biscoff spread (Biscoff can be found in the peanut butter section of any grocery store.  It comes in smooth or crunchy.)

*A blender
What To Do:
Blend all of the ingredients really well.  If you need to take the shake with you, just pour it into a shaker cup for later.

Cheesy and Easy Squash and Zucchini Casserole

3/31/2013

Picture
Let me start out by saying that I absolutely LOVE to cook.  Due to my lifestyle, I never get a chance to cook.  Well, I finally got some time to cook a home cooked meal.  One of the items I decided to make was a squash and zucchini casserole.  I must say that it turned out great!  It seemed to be even better the next day.  If you love squash and zucchini, I suggest you try this casserole :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ingredients:
Picture
There aren't many ingredients you will need.  Remember, the recipe is easy!
*2 pounds of squash
*2 pounds of zucchini
(You may do all squash or all zucchini..)
*2-3 sweet onions
*1-2 Tablespoons of REAL butter
*3 table spoons of olive oil
*8 ounces (1 cup) of sour cream
*1/4 cup of half and half
*3 large eggs
*4-8 ounces of cheese (preferably Parmesan, cheddar, or a combination)
*1 sleeve of butter crackers (crushed)
*1 teaspoon finely chopped thyme leaves (optional)
*salt and freshly ground black pepper for taste
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Preparing:

*Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
*Butter a 13x9 baking dish.  You may use cooking spray instead.
Picture

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cut the squash and zucchini into thin slices.
Cut the onions into thin to medium rings.
Picture
Saute' the onions in the olive oil and butter for about 5 minutes.
Picture
Add the squash, zucchini, salt, pepper, and thyme.  Cook an additional 20-25 minutes.
Picture
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Using a draining spoon, place the squash, zucchini, and onions into a buttered 13x9 baking dish.  DO NOT DISCARD THE JUICES!
Picture
In a separate mixing bowl, whisk the half and half and eggs together.  Add the sour cream and whisk until smooth.  Add the left over juices.  Finally, add the cheese a little at a time.
Picture
Pour the cheese mixture over the squash, zucchini, and onions.  Be sure to manipulate the vegetables so that the cheese mixture is evenly distributed.
Picture

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Bake the casserole for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese sauce sets.
*Sprinkle the cracker crumbles over the casserole and bake an additional 10 minutes, or until the cracker crumbles are golden brown.
Publix Half Marathon
3/17/2013
I did it! I did it! I did it!!!!  I am soooooo excited about completing my first half marathon!  It took me 2 hours, 24 minutes, and 55 seconds.  I must say, it was quite challenging, interesting, and funny.  I say it was funny because of all the crazy things that were going through my mind as I was running.  Let me tell you, I have never seen a running course with so many hills and inclines!  I am just glad that I was able to run in this event with my fellow WJR Club members.  Below are some pics.
Shout Out! (E.Y.L.)
2/12/2013
I would like to send a special "Shout Out" to a great lady, cousin, and friend, Ms. Chante' Chatman!  She really does a great job with the  young ladies of the Emerging Young Leaders (E.Y.L.).  She goes above and beyond to help others.  I really don't know where she gets the energy from to do it all, but she is truly an inspiration : )
Below is a video of the wonderful step performance of the young ladies of E.Y.L and some random pics.  I hope you enjoy : )
Product Alert!
1/3/2013
Hi Ladies!  I am sooooo excited about the new Cantu Shea Butter line for naturals!  There are several products, but I have only tried the curling cream.
Picture
I used the curling cream to do my twists after a wash.  Of course I ended up adding olive oil and I added macadamion nut oil (I have recently been using this oil instead of coconut oil.  I love it!).  Anyway, it blended very well.
Picture
After putting it on my hair, I noticed how it defined my “slinky-like” curls.  I also noticed how it elongated my twists.  The final test to know if I will make this my new staple product is when I take my hair down.  If my hair is moisturized when I take the twists down with minimal tangles, then it will definitely be a keeper.  I will let you know.
Picture
The next product I am sooooo excited about is the Creme of Nature shampoo with Argan Oil.  I am definitely making this my new staple shampoo.  Remember, I only use a shampoo every two washes (click to check out my hair washing routine).  I noticed an instant difference with this shampoo.
The shampoo left my hair soft and moisturized!  Also, it is sulfate-free : )  I think there is also a conditioner.  If so, I may try it out.  If I do, I will definitely let you know. . .
For more information about the hair products I use, please check out my hair products page.
